Attend Events & Activities
Carolina Firsts is proud to sponsor several events throughout the academic year. In the Fall, we kick off the year with a Welcome Back Dinner Reception followed by Family Weekend and a Homecoming Celebration. In the Spring, we end on a high note by hosting the Carolina Firsts Graduation Recognition and Pinning Ceremony.
The purpose of these events is to:
- Highlight the unique experiences of First Generation College Students (FGCS)
- Connect FGCS with one another with the goal of building a Carolina Firsts Community centered around pride, resiliency and persistence.
- Continue to raise awareness about the needs and strengths that FGCS bring to Carolina.
Carolina Firsts Welcome Back Reception
New and returning First Generation College Students are invited to attend this event and share their experiences on their first day of classes. With the help of Advocates, Faculty, Staff and Chancellor Folt, we encourage students to set their goals for the academic year and to reflect on how they will navigate potential challenges. All students leave with a letter written by a recent Carolina Firsts alumni providing advice, tips on success and words of encouragement.
Fall Family Weekend
In partnership with the Office of New Student and Family Programs, each Fall we host a reception for the incoming Carolina Firsts class and their parents. During this event, parents are celebrated and encouraged to remain active participants in their student’s college life. Family photos are taken at the Old Well and parents are given frames to commemorate their first family weekend at Carolina.
Each fall, Carolina Firsts are invited to attend a homecoming breakfast reception that takes place right before the Homecoming game. During this event, the winner of the Carolina First t-shirt design competition is revealed and students are given t-shirts displaying the winning design. This is social event where students, parents, faculty and staff come together to celebrate what has become a new Carolina tradition.
Each summer prior to the beginning of their first year at Carolina, First Generation College Students are invited to attend an orientation session. During this time, students are asked to attend a Resource Fair where staff and students welcome and share important information about resources and opportunities for FGCS.
