Carolina Firsts Events

Carolina Firsts is representative of a collaborative effort across the UNC campus to support the diverse experiences of first-generation college students. The administrative home of this work is housed within the Center for Student Success and we are proud to connect with campus partners and students throughout the academic year. We support the university’s mission and strategic plan, Carolina Next, by engaging in events and activities to build a robust community of support.

The purpose of these events is to:

  • Highlight the unique experiences of First Generation College Students (FGCS)
  • Connect FGCS with one another with the goal of building a Carolina Firsts Community centered around pride, resiliency and persistence.
  • Continue to raise awareness about the needs and strengths that FGCS bring to Carolina.

Carolina Firsts Kickoff

New and returning First Generation College Students are invited to attend an event to start the new semester each fall. Returning students are encouraged to share their experiences and make new connections with incoming first year Firsts! This event can coincide with Weeek of Welcome or other closely aligned welcome happenings across campus.

First-Gen Fridays

Every first Friday of the month, staff and students will host a drop-by at a campus location for Firsts to stop by for general Q&A. We will also have snacks and materials students can pick up as they learn more about the supportive community we have for Carolina Firsts. In addition, each First-Gen Friday will have an email blast to the Carolina Firsts community with the latest news and tips from the Center for Student Success and other campus partners.

Fall Family Weekend

In partnership with the Office of New Student and Family Programs (NSFP), each fall we host an event for the incoming Carolina Firsts class and their parents. During this event, parents are celebrated and encouraged to remain active participants in their student’s college life.
