Become a Carolina Firsts Advocate
Faculty and staff are invited to become a Carolina Firsts Advocate
As a Carolina Firsts Advocate, you will join a committed group of professionals dedicated to student success, appreciating the experiences of first-generation college students, and supporting students on their path to graduation. We currently have advocates from over 50 departments at UNC-Chapel Hill. Please view our list of Advocates and consider becoming an Advocate today! You can make a difference in the life of a Carolina First. To schedule a group or individual training, please contact Carmen Huerta-Bapat, Carolina Firsts Coordinator, at The training will include:

  • An overview of the experiences of first-generation college students at Carolina
  • A discussion of barriers to college completion
  • A discussion of factors linked to college persistence and completion
  • Features of effective college programs and supports
  • University resources
  • And how you can help Carolina Firsts in your daily work with students
